Wages for many state workers have failed to keep up with the cost of living, leading to high turnover rates and overall low staffing. Moreover, many state workers feel that their compensation is not adequate after accounting for the stress and safety hazards they experience on the job. Privatization, which transfers public goods and services into the hands of nonprofits and corporations, has also reduced job standards and the quality of services. This report details the lived realities of Texan state workers and details the bills that state lawmakers can pass to guarantee salary increases for state workers.
